# Delegated Representatives (DReps)

A DRep is any individual or entity who have signed a simple transaction to lock a refundable 500 Ada in receipt of an ID to participate in governance on behalf of ada-holders who may not have the participating capacity.

While ada-holders can vote directly on governance actions, DReps vote based on the total power of ada delegated to them. DReps exist to improve voter participation and make insightful voting decisions for the community.

### **How It Works**

1. Any ada-holder can delegate their voting power to a preferred DRep.
2. DReps act as representatives to review governance proposals and cast votes.
3. Voting outcomes help decide protocol parameter upgrades, budget allocation, and other governance actions.

These are the key stages of a Delegated Representative’s journey - from registration and active participation, to retiring from the role.

* **Register as a DRep** – Complete the on-chain registration process
* **Build Visibility** – Share your motivations, expertise, and governance approach
* **Vote on Governance Actions** – Participate in decision-making by voting on proposals
* **Engage in Governance Activities** – Join discussions and contribute to community-driven improvements.
* **Retire as a DRep** – End or suspend your role as a DRep

* **Registered and Inactive** - Registered yet Inactive DReps are those who have registered to become DReps however, they have not participated in governance and voting activities for a while.
* **Registered and Active** - DReps who consistently participate in voting on governance actions are labeled as Active DReps.
* **Retired** - Any registered DRep can retire from the role after terminating their credentials and announcing publicly that they will no longer perform their duties as a DRep.
