# Ada-Holders

An ada-holder is anyone who owns ada, Cardano’s native currency, and uses it to participate in Cardano’s on-chain governance. Ada-holders have the right to vote directly on proposals or delegate to DReps.\
\
In CIP-1694, ada-holders are important in facilitating governance, shaping protocol upgrades, constitutional amendments, and treasury spending in the ecosystem.

Liquid democracy makes delegated votes reversible at any time through tools like GovTool and any Cardano governance compatible wallets.

### Voting Directly On Governance Proposals

Ada-Holders can vote directly on proposals that shape the Cardano blockchain.

* Use tools like[ gov.tools](https://gov.tools/), [tempo.vote](https://tempo.vote), etc to browse proposals, connect your wallet, and submit your vote (Yes / No / Abstain).
* Direct voting gives you full control in decisions like protocol upgrades or treasury fund allocations.
* The more ada you hold, the more voting power you have. Even small ada-holders can make a difference.

{% hint style="info" %}
Direct voting is perfect if you want to stay hands-on with Cardano governance without delegating to DReps
{% endhint %}

### Delegating Your Vote To A DRep

Ada-Holders can delegate their voting power to any active DRep listed in the directory.

* DReps are community members who vote on behalf of ada-holders&#x20;
* You can browse available DReps, view their profiles, and select one whose values align with yours.
* Delegation can be done easily via governance tools or compatible wallets.

{% hint style="info" %}
Delegation is reversible. Ada-holders can switch DReps or return to self-voting anytime they choose. [Learn more about DReps](/toolkit/getting-started/editor.md#dreps).
{% endhint %}

### Why Your Voice Matters

Every ada-holder, regardless of the size of their voting power, contributes to Cardano’s decentralized governance model. They strengthen Cardano’s vision of shared responsibility through voting and delegation, and help maintain the security, transparency, and direction of the protocol.<br>
