# DRep Roles & Responsibilities

Defining the roles and responsibilities of the DRep, makes it easy for delegators in Cardano have an understanding of what to expect from the role. This ensures the ecosystem remains open, fair, and guided, and ADA holders will trust the way of doing things and the people contributing to it.&#x20;

The primary role of DReps (as defined under CIP 1694) is to contribute to the democratic governance model within the ecosystem by representing the interests of delegators and exercising their voting power on proposed governance actions.

* A DRep can receive delegation from Ada holders&#x20;
* DReps can submit a proposal for governance actions&#x20;
* DReps review and vote Yes, No, or Abstain on governance actions

### Building Trust & Credibility As A DRep

This starts with DReps maintaining a level of professionalism in their roles. DReps exist in the community to enforce a decentralised governance system. It is required of active DReps to show up consistently in their role, disclose all voting rationales, backed with evidence.&#x20;

#### To build trust and credibility, DReps must:

* Engage with the community through campaigns and participation in governance events&#x20;
* Provide correct and updated personal information and qualifications in your profile bio
* Voting consistently, in the interest of your delegators&#x20;
* Share the rationale for every voting round you partake in as a DRep
* Having an immutable (unaltered) transaction history and voting history
* Share informed opinions on governance actions and policies

### Values Of A DRep

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Fairness</strong></mark></summary>

DReps are required to maintain fairness at all times. To ensure fairness, DReps must refrain from receiving ADA from ADA holders in exchange for voting on their personal proposals.

</details>

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Alignment</strong></mark></summary>

DReps representing delegators must vote on governance proposals that align with the interests of the group they represent.

</details>

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Community Leader</strong></mark></summary>

DReps representing delegators are recognized as community leaders in the ecosystem. They have a responsibility to protect the interests and future of Cardano governance.

</details>

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Competence</strong></mark></summary>

Competence is a vital value each DRep must have. Knowing what the DRep role requires, how to vote on governance actions, and represent the interests of delegators.

</details>

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Visionary</strong></mark></summary>

DReps need both technical and non-technical insight when voting on Governance Actions. It is important for DReps to apply the right expertise depending on the governance action type and anticipate how their votes can improve the ecosystem.

</details>

<details>

<summary><mark style="color:blue;"><strong>Transparency</strong></mark></summary>

An active DRep must be transparent at all times. Delegated representatives need to provide a voting rationale for each proposal publicly, and be agreeable to the decisions of your delegators, even if you disagree.
